What Laugh Lines Have to Say About Your Bones

A duck walks into a restaurant. Asks the server, “Do you have any pickles?”

Duck comes back the next day, asks the server again, “Do you have any pickles?”

I love to laugh. I really do think it’s the best medicine. What I don’t love, however, are those little lines that have crept up over recent years around my eyes, mouth, and on my forehead. Anyone else know what I’m talking about? Turns out, these oh-so-glamorous creases can actually provide some insight about our bone health.

According to a new study, lower bone density is linked to deeper facial wrinkles. The study examined 114 women in their 40s and 50s who were not on hormone therapy and were within 3 years of entering menopause and examined 11 spots on the face and neck, which were also tested for skin firmness. Bone density was measured at the hip, lumbar spine, and heel. 

Firmer face and forehead skin was found to be associated with greater bone density. This could be because bones and skin share similar building blocks – collagen. As we age, changes in collagen levels are what are responsible for skin related changes. Turns out, these altered levels can also contribute to deterioration of bone.

All of the involved researchers agree that more long-term studies are needed to further confirm the results, but it’s just another reason to slap on the sunscreen! Try purchasing a daily moisturizer that has SPF protection in the mix, that way something you’re probably already doing – moisturizing – can do double duty and provide that SPF coverage we all need!

Also make sure you’re getting the recommended amount of calcium (800-1,000mg/day for males and females age 19-50) to keep those bones strong. Some form of resistance exercise is also beneficial to the skeleton, so try to incorporate this into your workout regimen at least 2 days per week.
