March is National Nutrition Month!

About a year ago the USDA replaced the pyramid with the new MyPlate to give a better visual of what we should be eating daily. Every year in March should remind us to eat healthier because it is National Nutrition Month! This yearly reminder should help us refocus our nutritional needs. The theme this year is Get Your Plate in Shape. For more information, please visit eatright.org. So what exactly does it mean to get your plate in shape?

This year's logo depicts the significance of not only nutrition but also exercise. Adults need to engage in daily physical activity and this could be a minimum of 10 minute bouts throughout the day. Try taking a brisk walk 3 times a day for 10 minutes. We all tend to be busy with school, work, and families that we don’t have time for 30 minutes of exercise, but try to find 10 minutes in your schedule to get in activity. 

Now that you have found time to take a 10 minute wellness break, how is your nutrition? Your plate doesn't need to look like MyPlate at every meal; however during the day are you getting enough fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins? Sometimes I even get confused on what a serving size equals. Check out this website to learn more.I was so surprised - I am doing better then what I thought!

The general idea behind these efforts is to make small changes that can benefit your whole life. Planning is crucial; take the time to make a healthy snack, watch portion size, try to get 100 extra steps, park further away, take a lap at the grocery store before shopping, and be creative.
