How to Choose a Gym

by Joanna

“I really want to join a gym or fitness center, but I have no idea what I should be looking for.  Can you help?”  I get that question a lot.  I agree too – it can be overwhelming to decide what you need and want in a gym!

The first thing you need to do is figure out your goals.  What do you want to get out of joining a gym?  Your needs should match with what the facility has to offer.

Once you’ve narrowed down your top choices, call to arrange a tour of the facility and to talk to a staff member about pricing.  Several things to take note of when doing your research are:

Cleanliness.  Do members wipe down the equipment or is there a staff member continuously walking around and spraying machines?  How clean are the locker rooms?  The last thing you want to do is get sick from the health club because it’s not properly maintained.

Staff.  Is the staff friendly?  Are they knowledgeable?  It’s important to have a staff that knows the proper way to operate equipment.  Are the personal trainers certified? Is the staff certified in CPR should an emergency arise?

Classes. What group exercise classes are offered?  Check out the times and dates.  Some clubs only offer classes during the day and if you work 8-5, it might be difficult to take advantage of them.

Location and hours.  Is the location convenient from your home or work?  Are the hours convenient?  What are the peak hours?

Amenities.  Is the use of towels included?  Is child care provided on-site?  Is there plenty of parking available?

Cost and contract.  When is the billing cycle?  How long is the term of the contract? What happens at the end of the contract term?  Most clubs have it written into the contract that after the initial term, your membership will go on a month to month basis unless you cancel in writing.   What is the cancellation policy?  Are you able to cancel if you move?  What is and isn’t included in the membership fee?

Reputation.  What are others saying about the facility?

Trial period.  Some clubs will offer a trial period while others will charge a nominal fee.  It’s important to try out the club on the days and times you would be planning to go.  This way you can see how crowded it is and if equipment would be available.

Remember that the most expensive club is not necessarily the best one.  Being happy with your decision is key because if you don’t use the membership you won’t be able to see the results and benefits!
