4 Healthy Tips for Your Summer Vacation

by Megan

It seems as though everyone here at work has their summer vacation planned.  I’ve heard about several Caribbean cruises, one fantastic-sounding trip to a resort in Mexico and a couple of guys were recently was telling me about a trip later this summer out to Vegas for a bachelor party.  Now, it’s hard to imagine how these different vacations could be similar, but there is a common thread tying them all together.  Any guesses what that could be?

All too often, once on vacation people tend to toss worries, cares and diets to the wind! Trust me, it’s not easy to keep eating healthy on most trips – have you seen some of those resort buffets?! You’d hate to insult someone by not trying a little bit of everything!

Now, I know what you’re thinking.  “Groupie, stop trying to kill my vacation fun! How am I supposed to enjoy myself on vacation if I worry about overeating?”  I promise that keeping to a healthy lifestyle while on vacation doesn’t need to be a burden.  In fact, below are several suggestions that won’t cramp your style and will help you stay on the right diet track while on vacation!

Buffet Buffer. When at buffets, stick to the practice of filling your plate only once. It may seem challenging, but you’ll soon find that if you try just a small portion of everything you are interested in trying, one plate is all it will take. As an added bonus, you won’t have to spend the rest of your day lying on the beach, bemoaning how full you are.

Find a Dessert Buddy. Dessert is certainly one of the great pleasures of vacation. However, try not to make ordering dessert a daily ritual. When you do decide to order, buddy up and share with a friend. You’ll satisfy your sweet tooth while saving yourself half the calories.

Make a Game Plan for Fitness. Vacations are meant to be a time of fun and relaxation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find fun ways to keep fitness into your routine. Make a plan to go for a sunrise (or sunset, for you night owls) stroll along the beach. Beach volleyball, anybody? Hit the local disco clubs to dance up a sweat in the evenings. There’s opportunities everyone on vacation to be active and have fun!

Take a Break, Road Warrior. If you’ve got a road trip planned this weekend, take some time to stop and eat your meals. People who eat an entire meal while in the car tend to not pick up on the signs their bodies give them when they’ve eaten enough. Additionally, a meal stop gives you the opportunity to get out and go for a short walk to stretch out your legs and reenergize.

Above all, be sure to enjoy yourself while on vacation!  Staying healthy this summer doesn’t have to be troublesome while you take a well-deserved trip.  Find fun ways to integrate healthy habits in your day-to-day vacation activities. You’ll find it’s not hard at all!
