The Stairway to Better Health

by Sarah

Does your typical walking path look something like this?

Mine does too! Clear skies with a warm breeze on a safe walking path or sidewalk. Recently I have been thinking about different ways I can increase my stamina and add in some interval training to my workouts. While on my usual walk, I came across this set of stairs…

What a great FREE place to exercise! We all know of a somewhere that has stairs – work, home, or even a public building such as a library or parking garage.  Why not use these stairs to your advantage? Whether you are new to exercise or just looking for something new to do, stairs can be a great option.

Remember, when starting a stair workout or any workout always remember to do a short 3-5 minute warm-up to get your body ready for exercise. If you are new to a stair workout, take things slow and get comfortable with the concept. Nothing would be worse than going too fast and falling down! Once you get comfortable choose the exercises that are right for your fitness level. Walking up and down the stairs may be more of a workout than you are used to and that’s ok! The main thing is that you are going outside of your comfort zone and pushing yourself to the next level.

Here is a stair workout for beginners that I found very helpful. If you are looking to challenge yourself a little bit more, check out these videos. Video 1 and Video 2. You don’t need to complete as many repetitions or sets as described in the videos so take it at your own pace. I found that learning the different movements and making my own number of sets for my fitness level was more beneficial.

I plan to use the stairs in the picture and the stairs I have at home to make my workouts more interesting and increase my heart rate during my workouts. Will you try something new? Take the stairs and see what happens!

Be Well,

Sarah.
