The Blame Game

by Joanna

The blame game is a popular game in which a person who is looking to accomplish certain health goals places the blame on something else besides themselves for their lack of success. Here are some popular choices of what/whom to blame for not reaching weight loss goals:

  1. My spouse/family doesn’t like what I fix for meals that I need to eat to lose weight.
  2. It’s too expensive to eat healthy and lose weight.
  3. I have an injury and can’t exercise.
  4. I don’t have time to exercise.
  5. There are too many birthday parties/holidays for a diet.

Let’s take a look at each of them individually and I’ll give you my tough love advice.

My spouse/family doesn’t like what I fix for meals that I need to eat to lose weight.
So what? Fix them whatever they want to eat (i.e. casserole) and then make yourself something else (i.e. salad, chicken and brown rice). Yes, it’s a little more work, but don’t let someone else be the reason you don’t reach your goals. Or if you refuse to be a short order cook, eat a small portion of what everyone else has (i.e. casserole) and have a healthy side (i.e. salad or other veggies). Boom.

It’s too expensive to eat healthy and lose weight.
Obesity has been said to be a socioeconomic problem. A two-liter of soda costs less than a gallon of milk. Cheetos cost less than a bag of apples. But you know what? It’s less expensive to eat less in general. Try a Happy Meal instead of a Value Meal at McDonald’s. It will save you money and calories. Eat half the portion of what you cook. Then you’ll have dinner for two nights. You get the point. Boom.

I have an injury and can’t exercise.
Ok, that’s fine – you can’t exercise. But you don’t have to exercise to lose weight. I would never tell anyone NOT to exercise if they could, but majority of weight loss comes directly from what you put in your mouth. Don’t eat like you’re a college football player if you aren’t anymore. Boom.

I don’t have time to exercise.
See above. Boom.

There are too many birthday parties/holidays for a diet.
There are several things you can do to combat this problem. Eat before you go so you eat less at the party. Bring a healthy dish to pass and eat it. Get a small piece of cake or skip it all together. You’re there to celebrate the person, not the food. Boom.

Stop blaming other people/things. Take ownership of fact that you maybe ate too much. It happens. Question is: What else have you learned? Comment below and let's get you back on track!
