Run Essentials

by Megan

Someone recently asked me what my favorite running “gear” was and at first I thought, “well, decent shoes and whatever is clean in my closet” but then I thought harder and came up with this list. Here are my “musts” for a run (I’m not bothering to mention a shirt and pants/shorts, that should be obvious- you don’t want to get arrested!):

Good socks.
I mentioned before I’m a sock snob now but it’s because I do not get blisters with good socks= worth it. I love, love, love my SmartWool socks but they are more expensive than most. However, my mom usually gets me a few pair each Christmas so that’s what I use. Put them on your gift list.

Vaseline.
Why Vaseline? Because I don’t like chafing. Enough said. Yes, you can buy products made specifically to reduce chaffing but I swear by a tub of Vaseline- it’s not fancy but it’s cheap and it works.

Good sports bra.
Guys, you don’t need to worry about this but I think most women will agree this is a must. I used cheap bras for years but upgraded to some pricier models recently. I don’t buy many- I think I have three, I rotate them and air dry them to help them last longer. Also, just a tip- even if they say they are “seamless” still use something to prevent chaffing in hot weather. Trust me.

Coffee.
Before my run. What can I say? It’s my reward to myself for getting up to run!

That’s really it. Sure, a nice watch, sunglasses, fancy shorts are all fun but they aren’t necessities for running. If you’re just starting out these are the basics- don’t think you need to spend money on expensive accessories or apparel.

Other runners- what do you consider a “must” when it comes to gear?
