New Goals for the New Year

by Megan

As I was opening up my tea satchel yesterday I read the quote on the bag: “Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it” by PJ O’Rourke. Hmm…so I’m assuming my favorite celebrity gossip website wouldn’t count as something that would make me look good.

This brings up a good point though- I don’t think I’ve sat down to read a book in a few months. And I have plenty to read, that’s not the issue. Reading just gets put on the list of “Things I should do and want to do…after I’ve done everything else”. Does anyone else out there have a similar list? Well, with January almost gone I’ve decided to start making my resolutions for 2017. Here is what I came up with:

  • Spend 10 minutes a day reading: 10 minutes is a doable amount of time I could fit in before I fall asleep, I figure I’ll be able to finish a few books a month but if I finish at least one, that’s more than I was reading before.
  • Put my phone away at night before my child goes to bed: he isn’t awake that much when we get home from work, it’s time to stop splitting those few hours between him and the phone. Texts, emails and SnapChat can wait.
  • Continue getting some form of exercise in daily, even if it’s only 15 minutes. I would like to aim for 30-45 minutes of cardio most days of the week and strength train twice a week, but I found that the “all or nothing” feeling had me leaning toward the “nothing” too often.
  • Meal plan on the weekend before grocery shopping: this is to make the week easier, stay within our grocery budget and make sure we’re eating a variety of healthy foods.

So there are my resolutions for 2017, nothing too crazy but I think they will have a positive impact on me and my family. What do you want to do differently this upcoming year? What has helped you to stick with past resolutions? It's not too late to make some good changes in 2017!
