Morning Rituals

If you type “Morning Rituals” into Google or any other search engine, you will find topics like “6 Morning Rituals of Steve Jobs, Tony Robbins, Oprah, and Other Successful Leaders,” “7 Morning Rituals to Empower your day and Change your Life,” and “Five Simple Morning Rituals of Exceptionally Successful People,” to name a few.  So, I dug in to these sources, and they all had similar themes.

  • Wake up a little earlier - As Benjamin Franklin said, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
  • Practice Gratitude – Focusing on the things that are working in your life, reinforces happiness and positivity, no matter how big or small these things are.
  • Move – It doesn’t matter if its 5 minutes of light stretching or a full-blown strength and conditioning routine…move your body!
  • Prioritize your day’s tasks – List the things that are most important that you accomplish in the day.

So, why can these things help empower your day, change your life, and make you exceptionally successful? Well, one of my mentors said something that really hit home for me. She said we often wake up and are immediately reactive to our surroundings. Meaning, we act in response to our surroundings, i.e. taking care of our children, reading emails, or freaking out about a deadline we have by 4 pm. So, by not having a solid routine, we instantly wake up to managing chaos. A morning of chaos leaves you already exhausted by the time you get to work, leading to more reactive chaos. By creating a morning ritual with some of the activities listed above or in the other sources provided, it can help you start your day with more intention and take control over the kind of day you want to have. The activities help you create positivity that help you stay powerful and keep your day productive.

So, how do you implement this? Well, just like starting anything new, pick something that you know you can do consistently, and with time, you will notice some changes. The cool thing is, these simple activities don’t have to take a ton of your time. I spent two minutes this morning thinking about three things I was grateful for, and it shaped the rest of my day with positivity. And yes, one of them was coffee.
