How to Pick the Perfect Watermelon

by Melissa
It is not summer until I have had a delicious and juicy watermelon! We are in peak watermelon season right now! I absolutely love getting a juicy and flavorful watermelon and incorporating it into my days in the summer time! Watermelon is a great summertime snack because it is low calorie, hydrating and full of fiber! It’s a quick snack that tastes amazing!

To me, there is nothing more disappointing than getting home and slicing open a watermelon, only to reveal a thick rind and little to no flavor. This summer I have been on a mission to figure out just how to pick the best possible watermelon without having to cut it open, and I'm happy to share my findings with you!

  1. The watermelon should feel heavy for its size.
  2. Watermelons develop a yellow spot where they were laying on the ground during growing, check that this spot is a creamy yellow. This is a good indication that the watermelon is ripe!
  3. Tap the watermelon, it should have a deep hollow sound. If it is not ripe or over ripe, it will give a dull hollow sound.

And that’s it! What are your tricks for picking the perfect watermelon?
