Food Label To Get a Facelift

by Joanna

Sometime soon, the Food and Drug Administration (aka the FDA) will be rolling out new food labels.  When I say sometime soon, I mean I have no clue when.  The comment section to the proposed changes to the food label is now closed, which leads me to believe it might be out in the next year or so.

Here is a fact sheet with the refreshed design:

Also, interestingly, the FDA will be updating their information with what a serving size typically is these days.  For instance, one serving of ice cream is listed as ½ cup. “Half a cup of ice cream is absurd,” said Marion Nestle, a professor in the department of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University.  A serving of ice cream will be listed as one cup when the changes roll through.

What do you think of the proposed changes?  Personally, I like the new label better and think it will help consumers make more informed decisions.  What do you think about the updated serving sizes?  Do you think it encourages people to think that over-eating is “normal” or that it’s necessary to stay current?
