Be Well - Have Plants

by Joanna

Plants and flowers have long been making people feel happy and fulfilled.  But what exactly are the health and well-being benefits of plants?  A lot of studies have shown that there are many benefits!

Happiness.
Having flowers and ornamental plants can reduce stress level in addition to making people feel more secure and relaxed.

Healing.
Plants can aid in the healing process (think plants and flowers in hospital recover rooms)!  Plants can also help in therapy, giving the patient something to nurture and care for themselves.

Quality of Life.
Perceived quality of life, actually.  Because people associate a higher quality of life with beautiful landscaping, having plants and natural landscapes can make people believe that their life is better.

Memory.
Plants can help people concentrate and increase memory retention in the workplace and at home.  They can stimulate the senses and mind, leading to improved accuracy as opposed to environments without plants.

Improved Relationships.
People who are around plants more are shown to have better relationships with others by improving compassion; they are more likely to help others and have greater social relationships.

More Energy.
Spending time around plants can give people more energy.  More energy, in turn, can mean more productivity and better performance!

Coach Kaitlyn and I have a lot of plants by our desks.  We call it our “oasis”.  They are all in self-watering containers (water through the hole near the bottom.  We water them twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays).  For the one hanging in the corner, I bought these suspended ceiling hooks for our drop ceiling.  Give them a try!

Do you have plants in either your home or office?  There are certain indoor plants that require minimal work.  Most of what Coach Kaitlyn and I have are African Violets and Pothos plants (we like to clip and start new plants.  We also store our little faux Christmas tree among the live plants, but no one has seemed to notice – just adds a little more greenery.
