New to the Market: Advantame

by Joanna

As of this past May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved this sweetener. It’s the sixth artificial sweetener that has been approved and can be used in everything.

By everything I’m talking about; baked goods, non-alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, jams and jellies, chewing gum, candies, frostings, frozen desserts, gelatins, puddings, processed fruits and fruit juices, toppings and syrups. Wow. What a list.

When comparing artificial sweeteners to the common table sugar…

  • Aspartame is 200 x sweeter.
  • Sucralose is 600 x sweeter.
  • Advantame is a reported 20,000-37,000 x sweeter.

This is some sweet stuff.

Sounds like a good deal, increasing the sweetness, without those calories. But don’t be fooled.  I’m sure the rap sheet of aspartame is something the general public is aware of. Ajinomoto, the largest aspartame manufacture, is also the manufacturer of Advantame.

According to a European review, critical effect observed in animal studies included maternal toxicity in prenatal developmental toxicity study in rabbits. Long words but a good take away = not safe for pregnant animals. At all.

Another study by Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) key safety studies were flawed because too many mice tested died before the study ended to provide a large enough sample.

And last, but not least only 37 animal and human studies were FDA reviewed before deciding that this powerful sweetener could be consumed by humans.
