A Very Groupie Halloween: Healthy Treats!

by Megan

It’s almost here, folks! My favorite holiday of the year is just around the corner: Halloween! The costumes, the trick or treating, the scary movies on television – I can hardly wait! While I still have yet to figure out what I’m dressing up as (and I’m open for suggestions!) I have already started planning what I’ll be giving out to all the kids that come trick-or-treating around my neighborhood.

Now, while I do enjoy sweets (licorice, chocolate, gummy worms, oh my!) I also strive to feed my body with nutritious foods in order to keep my waistline down and my energy up. So this year I’m determined to find some treats that are tasty and healthy along with a few non-food alternatives! Here is what I have come up with so far:

Granola bars. I’ve chosen to give away some granola bars that are bars around 100-150 calories and are low in sugar. If you don’t watch the nutrition label though, some granola bars are hardly any better for you than a candy bar!

Boxes of raisins or trail mix. These make a great on-the-go snack that is easy to tuck into lunch boxes and backpacks. The fact that they’re nutritious doesn’t take away from their appeal and will be a great choice for trick-or-treat bags.

Glow sticks. No, not to eat! This is one of my non-edible ideas. These bright, neon tubes of plastic were the coolest things you could have had when I was younger, and from what I have seen I don’t think they’ve lost their appeal in the more recent years. Additionally, they’re great for children to carry while trick-or-treating. The light from the glow stick makes children easier to see when they’re traversing the neighborhood – safety first!

Halloween coloring books. Foster some creativity for the neighborhood children this year. Coloring books give the children a non-edible treat that they can enjoy long after Halloween night is over and the candy is gone.

What do you think about these ideas? How do you keep your children healthy during the candy-filled Halloween season?
