5 Ways to Stay Healthy at the Office

by Megan

I hate to say it.  I know it seems a little early to think about this, but winter is coming.  And along with winter come the sniffles, sneezes, head colds and nasty flu bugs.  When you spend eight or more hours a day with the same people, it becomes a challenge not to catch the current office illness.

I’ve compiled a list of five easy ways to help fend off sickness this winter.

Clean the cube. I know, I know.  It’s so easy during the course of the week to let your desk get a bit out of control.  Did you know, though, that your phone is one of the germiest things you come in contact with at the office? Use disinfecting wipes, microfiber cloths and disinfecting solution to help keep your area clean and keep you healthy.

Drink more water. I’m sure you hear this all the time, but it’s for good reason!  By staying hydrated, you’re helping your body fight off the germs that you come in contact with.  Keep a water bottle nearby. You’ll be more prone to drinking the stuff if it’s sitting right by you!

Eat your fruits and veggies. The best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need is through natural sources, like fruits and vegetables. So the next time you’re packing your lunch for work, trying tossing in an apple or orange for dessert.  And try packing a great spinach salad for a change of pace. The dark leafy greens are a great source of vitamins C and A.

Bring your own utensils. If you use the plastic forks and spoons provided at work, you may want to consider bringing in your own. This is particularly true if the plastic ware is not individually packaged.  While this is not something that may be needed year round, it’s something to keep in mind when you know of an illness spreading around work.

Get the flu shot. The flu shot is a great way to proactively fight any potential sicknesses. This is one step I definitely plan on taking. Many employers even offer the shot right at your office.  Check with your human resources department to see what is offered.

Sometimes, though, no matter how valiant your prevention efforts, you still find yourself sniffling and on the verge of the flu.  The best way to rebound quickly is to take the time to rest and recoup.  And this could mean using some of your sick days – don’t feel guilty for doing so.  This is the one time our coworkers will thank you for not sharing!
