It’s that time of year – Spring Cleaning! I started mine last weekend and was not prepared for what I discovered!  As I sorted through boxes of things I had never even used, projects I had put away for a rainy day, and things I saved thinking someday they would make great gifts, I realized, “I’ve turned into a pack rat!” I have always told myself, I’m not going to be that person, but low and behold that’s exactly what I’ve become.  It was at that moment I decided I would rid myself of the clutter and get organized!  After many hours of sorting and a trip to the local donation center, I felt a great amount of accomplishment and relief. It was like a weight had been lifted right off my shoulders!

Clutter in your house often resembles the clutter in your life. When you discard the unwanted/unused clutter you open up for new things and more energy. According to the National Soap and Detergent Association, getting rid of excess clutter would eliminate 40 percent of the housework in the average home. Which in my case and I’m sure most of yours’, would free up more time for fun activities and relieve a ton of stress! Below are a few helpful tips to help unclutter your home:

1.       Organize - tackle that junk drawer or storage room

2.       Reuse and Repurpose

3.       Throw Out:

·         Empty boxes that you think you might use at some point - You’ll never use them!

·         Clothes that don’t fit - You may squeeze into them someday, but will those bell bottoms really be in style then?!  Keep one or two of your favorite items and get rid of the rest!

·         Expired Medicines and Food –Make sure to check dates and rotate out things that have expired and are unsafe for consumption.

·         Broken gadgets or furniture that you’ll get around to fixing – That won’t happen for years if it hasn’t happened yet.

·         Old magazines – unless you want to keep them for reference, but remember that’s why we have libraries!

4.       Straighten and Cleanup – You’d be surprised how much of a difference this will make in both your home and your mood!

There are so many ideas out there for de-cluttering and reusing old items to help organize your house. With all of this spring cleaning and hard work, I’m hoping to get to the point where I can experience 40% less house work!  What are some of the ways you have reused things or organized your home?  I’m always looking for creative ways to re-organize!
