I’ve been getting a few questions on detox foot pads, which seem to be a new trend in alternative medicine.  The manufacturers claim that they work by drawing out toxins through the skin of the feet.  It has been said that these patches will increase your energy and improve your health.

I have not tried them myself, so I did some research and there doesn’t seem to be any legitimate research done on this product. Some individuals claim that they feel totally revitalized after using them, however others express that their only intended purpose is to separate gullible people from their money!  I recommend doing some research before going out and buying them.  I am always skeptical of products that have this much marketing behind them and no formal research.

Another popular and controversial detoxification method is going on a “detox diet.”  The Master Cleanse or Lemon Detox Diet, Fat Flush, 21 Pounds in 21 days and the Liver Detox Diet are some of the more popular so-called “detoxification” diet plans.

Those who market these types of diets claim that they will help purge our bodies of chemicals and toxins and help us to drop weight fast.  Many people are convinced that they need to try one of these diet plans to achieve optimal body performance.  Don’t fall for it!

The majority of doctors and dietitians agree that these extreme diets cause frustration, are a waste of money and could be potentially dangerous.  The limited variety of foods and minimum calories make it very difficult for one to get all the nutrients and energy needed for good health.  Sure, you will temporarily lose weight on these diets, but only because these plans are extremely low in calories.  Experts also say that restrictive “detox” diets slow your metabolism down, so once you start eating again it is harder to maintain a healthy weight.

Experts told WebMD that the best way to “detox” the body is to simply let your body do its job.  Your body is great at taking care of itself, unless you have a medical condition.  Your best bet is to drink plenty of fluids, avoid excess medications and alcohol and consume a healthy diet with plenty of variety.
