Myths are a funny thing, aren’t they? No one ever seems to know when and how they got started, but everyone seems to know and sometimes believe them. They’re so popular, there’s even a TV show that is all about proving them true or false! Have you ever seen Mythbusters on TLC?
Well, believe it or not, there’s also a LOT of myths out there all about health and wellness. I’ll be your own personal mythbuster as we explore four popular health myths!
1. Whiskey for a teething baby – FALSE!
This is an old wives’ tale - key word being OLD. Your mom may have done it for you, but these days, there are so many better alternatives. First of all, babies should not be consuming alcohol in any amount. Plus, whiskey has no numbing effect. Instead, try chilling a teething toy or damp washcloth in the freezer. The coolness will help to soothe and numb the gums.
2. Low-tar or light cigarettes are not as harmful as regular cigarettes – FALSE!
There is no safe tobacco product. The use of any tobacco product can cause cancer and other adverse health effects. This includes all forms of tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and spit tobacco; mentholated, "low-tar," "naturally grown," or "additive-free." The poisonous ingredients in cigarettes aren't just limited to tar and nicotine. A typical cigarette contains lead, ammonia (a household cleaner), arsenic (used in rat poison), benzene (used in making gas), butane gas, carbon monoxide (a poisonous gas), DDT (a banned insecticide), and polonium 210 (cancer-causing radioactive element).
3. Generic drugs are not as safe or effective as brand-name drugs – FALSE!
The Federal Drug Administration requires that all drugs be safe, effective and have the same quality, strength, purity and stability as brand-name drugs. They also work in the same way and in the same amount of time as brand-name drugs. If you have questions about drugs, contact your physician, pharmacist, or insurance company for information. You can also visit the FDA website for more information.
4. Fat free dressing is healthiest – FALSE!
While you save on calories, you’re getting no nutrition and tons of sugar - more than 2 teaspoons per serving. Plus, they block your ability to absorb certain antioxidants in salad greens and tomatoes — important compounds that reduce the risk of heart disease.
