It’s summer, the perfect time of year for enjoying outdoor activities: swimming, volleyball, picnics, golfing, concerts…..just to name a few! Being outdoors means exposure to sun which usually generates some negative press about the consequences on your health. Today I hope to shed some light on the positive effect sunshine can have on your overall health: vitamin D!.. [More]

It seems as though everyone here at work has their summer vacation planned. I’ve heard about several Caribbean cruises, one fantastic-sounding trip to a resort in Mexico and a couple of guys were recently was telling me about a trip later this summer out to Vegas for a bachelor party. Now, it’s hard to imagine how these different vacations could be similar, but there is a common thread tying them all together. Any guesses what that could be?.. [More]

My sister is a houseplant fanatic. Sometimes, just to tease her, I like to sing “Welcome to the Jungle” when I go over to visit. (She thinks it’s funny, don’t let her fool you!) While her house may not actually qualify as a jungle, it doesn’t take long to notice out that she’s a bona fide indoor green thumb. One time, I made the mistake about asking about one of the ivy plants she had sitting in her windowsill... [More]

I recently received an inquiry from one of my readers about adult acne and, more specifically, the claims that milk causes acne. First let me begin with a thank you for the question! Adult acne is an unpleasant condition, and as a result, there are a lot of theories on how and why people get it. In this post, I’m going to try and clarify some of noise out there about acne... As I was leaving my house last Friday I was scrambling around trying to find my keys. I checked my pockets, the key holder by the door, the car – they were nowhere to be found! Finally, only after I realized I needed to grab my lunch, I found my keys in the refrigerator! How on earth did I forget my keys in the fridge?!.. [More]

Well, that’s not quite the case for everyone. Unfortunately, the holidays can be a time of loneliness, anxiety and sadness for many people. How can this be?.. [More]

I remember my first pet. After begging for months, I finally became the proud owner of Tawny the orange cat. I was so excited when my parents brought Tawny home from the local humane association! However, with pet ownership comes the inevitable day when that beloved pet passes away. I still remember the feeling of loss the morning I discovered that Tawny had died... [More]

During these warmer months, many families are gearing up for an annual summer trip. I know when I travel, I have a ton of things that I need to remember. Did I bring enough clothes? Cash or credit card? Should I bring my running shoes? But do you think about your medications when making your travel plans? If you aren’t, you probably should be... [More]

Sometimes it seems like falling asleep can be quite the battle. For example, last night I crawled into bed at my normal 10:30 bedtime. However, I didn’t fall asleep for another hour! Every time I would close my eyes, my mind would start racing through all sorts of topics. What will I plant in my garden this year? Did I actually turn off that light upstairs? What should I pack for lunch in the morning? The thoughts just kept on coming, leaving me wide awake long after I should have been sleeping!.. [More]

It’s highly documented that men and women are by nature very different creatures. As John Gray, PhD so famously put it: “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. While Dr. Gray focused on the way men and women perceive relationships, his statement rings true in a number of areas. Did you know that men and women may even differ in symptoms of a heart attack?..
